Our team

At CFJ, our team is family - just like Fast & Furious... But in all seriousness, we work very hard to maintain our culture and our coaches are a huge part of that!

We pride ourselves on great coaching, making sure our clients are safe and yet are pushed at the right time and ways needed to ensure the members pursuit of fitness is achieved! All our coaches are hand picked, put through an internship phase (under the owner and head coach), and sent away for certification when ready.

We are here for you! With this in mind, we need our members to trust us. When we say to increase the weight or up the intensity, OR decrease the weight or lower the intensity our members need to remember that we are saying this in a thoughtful and calculated way. Respect for coaches and other members makes for a better experience for everyone.

Meet Our Coaches

Josh & Charisse Carabin

Owners & Operators

//

Josh was introduced to Crossfit the summer of 2011. It was by the far the hardest training he had ever done since leaving competitive sports and it was exactly what he needed. As an adventure guide for years in southern and northern Ontario, Josh loved to see folks be challenged by something they didn’t think they could do, only to be safely encouraged/guided into doing it! Going down there first set of white water rapids, climbing their first cliff, or crawling through that tight cave! Josh loved helping people get through the hard stuff and reap the benefits on the other side then, and the same goes for what we do now at CrossFit JONO! In 2012 Josh and Charisse started the process of opening an affiliate in the Sydney area and since then the gym has been growing every month!

Stephen Mackenzie

Coach

//

A decorated Firefighter and CrossFitter Steve has been coaching with CFJ for almost two years. Steve’s commitment to the sport of CrossFit has resulted in him catapulting himself to an elite level. It is always fun to watch athletes perform and do things that the vast majority cannot do. Steve comes across his athletic ability naturally as his dad is also an elite level CrossFitter. After all that intense training and driven competitiveness, Steve is a great guy and always willing to help out anyone in need… you can’t get rid of that firefighter heart. Steve’s been a wonderful addition to our staff at CFJ!

Brady MacDonald

Coach

//

Brady strolled in a few years ago with a quiet demeanor and seemed a little unsure at the beginning. He had spent a fair amount of time at traditional gyms and wasn’t sure what to expect from CrossFit Jono. It wasn’t long before everyone at CFJ knew who Brady was and he was well on his way of becoming a great coach. Brady is a paramedic and always seems to be ready for anything whether it be food, a competition, traveling… but especially food. He is an awesome guy who has helped make the CFJ staff better.

Lena Murphy

Coach

//

Lena's journey with CrossFit began in February 2014, when she decided it was time to take her fitness to the next level. After completing her CrossFit Level 1 Training course in June 2014, Lena began working as a trainer at CFJ and quickly fell in love with seeing others realize their potential, improve their fitness and enhance their overall lifestyle. Lena is an absolute gem with every quality you want in a coach! Lena’s passion for health and wellness have inspired her to pursue a wide variety of additional training that ranges from certifications in Pilates and Barre to her most recent accomplishment of becoming a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant (R.H.N.). As an enthusiastic supporter of local business, Lena is thrilled to be back at home in Cape Breton after a brief time away and is excited to be officially launching her own nutrition and lifestyle business, OPHIRA Holistic Health & Wellness this January!

Sonia Macvicar

Coach

//

Sonia has been with us from the beginning, first as a member and now as a coach. Sonia could not run the distance between telephone poles when she started at CFJ. Now she runs 5Ks. She has also made incredible strength and athletic progress! But more impressive is her quiet, but intentional movement toward her goals. Josh Carabin tells of how Sonia showed her phone to him recently and on it was a note with her goals on it from years ago, and being a coach was one of them! Incredible determination and the perfect example of hard work paying off! Sonia heads up our Master Class and is our mom of the Coaching staff.

Ericka Curry

Coach

//

Ericka can lift! She is the example of women who can lift a lot of weight and not look like chiseled gorillas. Not there is anything wrong with chiseled gorillas. Ericka started training at CFJ three years ago and had a natural athletism that lent itself well to weight lifting. She has since gone on to medal at provincials two years in a row! She's not all weights though…she can throw down on a hard workout anytime. Ericka has a gentle spirit which was one of the reasons she went into nursing. Ericka heads up our weight lifting class and is a great coach, always eager to better her own skills. An awesome coach for CFJ!

Sarah Martin

Coach

//

Sarah's fire for Crossfit burned strong from day one. Early on, she had an incredible drive and passion to achieve an elite level of fitness. This has resulted in multiple hours spent in the gym daily, and her consistency has paid off! She also got her level one CrossFit certification in July 2015 and has been coaching with CFJ since. One thing is for sure you won’t get into the gym without Sarah noticing and making sure you know she’s excited to see you. She has a heart of gold and we are thrilled to have her on our coaching staff.

Jeff Covey

Coach

//

Old man Covey (he’s not old) strolls in every day with a consistent smile and genuine care for everybody. The kinda guy who actually cares about your answer to “how was your day.” Jeff caught our eye a number of years ago with his steady progression, consistency in training, and willingness to help out other members. When asked if he would consider going through the coaching process at CFJ, his face lit up and his words have never left us. He said he would be honored to become a coach. This is such a testament to his mindset/approach to coaching at CFJ. Couldn’t ask for a better coach!

Jeff Mackinon

Coach

//

Jeff rolls in with his Monster truck every day from Macdonald Chrysler where he works as a full-time mechanic. Jeff approaches coaching with attention to detail and strives to make sure members are progressing with their fitness. Jeff has incredible drive and he is the kind of athlete you want on your team when you are down… He just keeps going! Another guy who is always ready to give a hand in anyw ay to anyone that asks. Happy to have Jeff on our coaching team!

Jenna Guy

Coach

//

What a gal! Jenna made her way into CFJ a number of years back and had the intensity fit for a lion! She threw herself into her training and has never looked back. Originally from the Northside, Jenna has a strong and awesome personality - wearing her heart on her sleeve. Right from the beginning, we knew it was only a matter of time before she would be ready to coach and move into a position where she can better our members and staff team.
